What is Professional Year Program?

It is a one-year program that aims at nourishing the students for the practical life ahead, giving them the required practical knowledge to work in Australia. The program offers a workplace experience along with other guidance that the student needs in order to compete in the professional world, being an international. The program is currently customized for graduating students of Accounting, Engineering and IT. The three programs are taught separately, focusing on the respective field.

 

The 44 week program is comprised of two key components. This division is based on their learning outcome.

In the first division, the program focuses on the student’s interpersonal skills along with the skills that are crucial in getting a job. These include making an eye-catching CV and the ability to write a crisp engaging cover letter. This makes sure that the graduate’s CV never lands in the dustbin. Moreover, the student is also taught about the working environment and culture in Australian organizations. Student’s presentation skills are also improved along the course of this program.

The second domain focuses on improving the practical skills of the individual through a 12-week long internship that offers the students with an insight of the practical world. This part of the program teaches the students about the work ethics and develops the necessary skills to excel in the professional life. Through this part of the program, the student develops the communication skills that play a significant role in a successful interview. Lastly, the student learns several other skills that aren’t taught in schools, including the skill of building a references.

In a nutshell, the PY program provides the international graduates with all the fundamental skills, interpersonal and practical, that give the international students an edge over the others in the job market. Students qualifying this program are more adapted to the Australian Organization and the work ethics of the professional life.

Requirements of PY Program

To be eligible for the PY program, you need to qualify the following requirements.

  1. Must have completed post-graduation or under-graduation from an Australian University.
  2. Must be under 50 years of age
  3. Must have a degree that qualifies for an occupation in the ‘skilled occupation list’ for the skilled graduate temporary visa (Subclass 485)
  4. Must hold a skilled graduate temporary visa (Subclass 485).
  5. Must meet the minimum English requirements i.e. a minimum score of 6.0 in IELTS with a minimum of 5 in each component.

PY in Accounting

The professional accounting body in Australia, Certified Professional Accountant (CPA), along with Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICA) and Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), developed the Professional Year Program for international graduates of Australia. The program aims at developing the required professional and interpersonal skills that the graduate needs in order to excel in Australian Organizations. Successful completion of this program entitles the candidate to all the other benefits of the PY program, including the 5 additional points for migration.

PY in Engineering

The Professional Year Program for engineering graduates has been developed by the Engineering Education Australia (EEA) to foster the professional and practical skills of the individual. The program trains the candidate according to the demands of the Australian Organization. There is a 12 weeks internship program in the 44 weeks of PY program, focused on providing the graduates with an insight of working experience in Australian organizations. This program significantly improves the employment chances of graduates along with a promising career in the field of engineering.

PY in IT

For the international graduates of IT, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) have developed a Professional Year Program that provides the graduates with the necessary training for a promising future in Australia. The program has been specially designed to work on the practical knowledge along with communication skills of the IT graduate. To provide the graduate with the fundamental training that is required to get a job in this field, the program includes 12 weeks internship program which helps the student learn practical techniques and also build a network of professional relationships that helps in the long run.
